Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved gambling on various card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play countless hours and don’t win most times. He earned some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he possibly could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.
The real improvement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would frequently play against one another. Howard was able to access a few of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his logical thinking skills. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL holdem.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
