Stu Unger: Poker Player
Saturday, 6. April 2013
The main reason for why Stu changed from gin rummy to poker was that he was a little too good at it. So skilled was he, that no one possibly could stand up to him. Even the apparently champions who were supposed to be the most favorable at gin rummy were crushed when they competed against Stu. One such gin rummy player was Harry Stein, nicknamed, "Yonkie". Mr. Stein suffered such a crushing defeat at the hands of mr. ungar that he apparently quit participating in it professionally and never resurfaced at a gin rummy tournament.
Certainly, with a image like that it was not very long before people became afraid of playing against mr. ungar. He could find no matches and in his agony he started doing something no one had performed before. He began offering beginning handicaps to likely competitors with the wish that they might just compete opposed to him if they thought they held an advantage. He deliberately started from a negative position and one tale has it that he even played with a constant absconder. Amid the contest, he received a few words of wisdom that the bad egg was at it once more but Stu Ungar guaranteed that he knew of the cheating and he would still win, which of course, he did.
The same trend followed Stu Ungar to sin city. He won so often that the casinos started asking him not to wager on their casinos anymore. The basis for it was that other poker room clientele refused to sit at the table if Stu was seated.
Stu Ungar is remembered more for his accomplishments in texas holdem poker but he always said that he was much more accomplished at gin rummy.
He defeated Doyle Brunson in the World Series of Poker in 1980 and became the youngest world champion. Because of his features that made him appear far younger than he was, he got the nickname, "The Kid".
