Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he loved playing different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and headed to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were tough as he played many hours and fail to win most times. He made some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate more on the game.
The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard was able to access some of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his strategic thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker arena ever. Howard Lederer headed to Sin City in Nineteen Ninety Three and played cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
