Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed betting on various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he played extensive hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus more on poker.
The real improvement in his skills began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would often challenge one another. Howard had access into a few of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, he would hone his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit holdem.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world ever. Howard relocated to Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
