Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems complex at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha High-Low provides an exciting assortment of wagering options and because you have numerous individuals trying for the high, as well as a few battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
