Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many players can get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same approach in nearly all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem difficult initially, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing collection of wagering options and because you have many players trying for the high, as well as many trying for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
