Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he loved betting on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and headed to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were tough as he would play many hours and lost most times. He earned some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and concentrate more on the game.
The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly compete against each other. Howard was able to access several of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
