Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he loved participating in various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little bit and headed to New York City to play some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he played countless hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.
The actual advancement in his game began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would frequently challenge one another. He was able to access a few of the best players in chess. With their help, he would hone his strategic thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit holdem.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
