Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants can get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at the start, following a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi-low offers an exciting range of betting options and seeing that you have many players shooting for the high hand, along with many shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
